He obtained doctorate degree on marine policy at Kagoshima University, Japan. He has produced various scientific works and wrote several books namely: Introduction to Coastal Sosiology (in bahasa); Coastal and Marine Sociology (in bahasa); Fisheries Political Ecology (in bahasa); Fishery Globalization: Indonesian Reposition (in bahasa); and Managing Coastal and Inland Waters (in english) published by Springer, Netherlands. He has also been actively involved in the formulation of Indonesian marine and fisheries policies and regulations since 2002 including of formulating the Fisheries’s Law No 31/2004, revision of the Coastal and Small Island Management’s Law, and formulation of Blue Economic’s Concept. In July 2008 he received 2008-Yamamoto International Award. He was the first winner of the JIFRS Yamamoto Prize for the best paper at the International Institute of Fisheries Economics and Trade (IIFET) Conference, in Nha Trang Vietnam. In 2009, he has been awarded the Distinguished Science Intellectual Property Award from the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2013, he received Awareness Academy Award for Human Resources in Fisheries from Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia. In 2017, he has been selected as outstanding lecturer with the highest EPBM grade. 4 In 2017 he is also receiving a new mandate as the 15th-Rector of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) period 2017-2022.
